Paul Stankard may spend up to sixty or eighty hours composing one of his two-inch- to seven-inch-tall botanical illusions—magical combinations of leaves, flowers, seedpods, insects, masks, and tiny spirit figures that capture the mystery of nature in a strikingly diminutive object. Encouraged initially by an art dealer who had seen his work in Atlantic City, the artist has consistently surpassed his own benchmarks, moving past early floral paperweights to introduce a spiritual dimension to his small and complex glass sculptures.
